From HVAC to Veterinary Tech: How Magnolia West Is Preparing Students for Careers
When I toured Magnolia West High School with Principal Josh Jacobs, I expected to learn about academics, athletics, and extracurricular activities. What surprised me most was the depth of the school’s Career and Technical Education programs.
For families considering a move to the area, this may be one of the most interesting parts of the school. Magnolia West gives students opportunities to begin learning a profession before they graduate, while also offering advanced academic paths including International Baccalaureate (IB), Advanced Placement, and Dual Credit.
Automotive Technology
Students interested in automotive careers can participate in a two-year program during their junior and senior years. The program gives students hands-on experience with automotive service and repair, from routine maintenance to more advanced mechanical work.
HVAC
The HVAC pathway was especially interesting to me. Students can begin the three-year track as sophomores and eventually progress into a practicum where qualifying students may spend part of their school day gaining real-world experience.
Veterinary Technology
For students interested in animals or veterinary medicine, Magnolia West offers a competitive Veterinary Tech pathway. Students gain exposure to both small and large animals and can learn skills involving animal care, grooming, and training.
Cosmetology, Education & Training, and FFA
The school also offers a cosmetology program with a working salon environment, an education and training pathway for future teachers, and agricultural opportunities through FFA. Magnolia West maintains a barn for students who may not have enough land at home to raise livestock.
MATRIX: Support for the Transition to Adult Life
Magnolia ISD’s MATRIX program — Moving Adults to Transition to Real Interest and Experiences — serves eligible students ages 18–21 who have completed academic graduation requirements but benefit from continued support as they transition into adult life. Its focus includes independence, employment readiness, daily-living skills, and meaningful adult experiences.
More than one definition of success
This was probably my biggest takeaway from the tour. Magnolia West is not telling every student there is only one successful path after graduation. College is one path. A skilled trade is another. Professional certification is another.
Principal Josh Jacobs described Magnolia West as a “culture campus” — a school with the resources and programs of a larger district while maintaining a more personal, small-town atmosphere.
For families searching for Magnolia TX schools, Magnolia ISD, the Magnolia West High School IB program, Career and Technical Education programs, or homes near Colton and Todd Mission, this is the kind of information I believe is worth seeing firsthand.
That is why I’m visiting the schools, businesses, and surrounding community myself — so buyers can understand more than just the address.
